Mobile vs. Garage Detailing: Which One Is Right for Your Car?
Quick answer
Mobile detailing comes to your home or office and is best for routine cleans, busy schedules, and standard interior and exterior work. Garage detailing is better for heavy deep cleans, bad weather, and jobs that need controlled conditions. For most Montreal drivers, mobile wins on convenience. At Gleam, you can choose either.
You want your car detailed. Now you have to pick how. Someone comes to your driveway, or you drop the car off at a studio. Both get you a clean car. They are not the same experience, and one usually fits your situation better than the other.
Here is the honest breakdown, with no sales spin, so you can choose the right one for your car and your week.
What's actually the difference?
Mobile detailing means the detailer brings everything to you. Water, power tools, products, vacuums, the works. They set up in your driveway, your condo garage, or your office parking lot and handle the whole job on site.
Garage detailing means you bring the car to a fixed studio. The work happens indoors, in a controlled space, with lighting and drainage built for the job.
That is the only real difference: who travels. The actual detailing, the products, and the standard should be identical either way. At Gleam they are, because it is the same team and the same kit no matter where the car sits.
Mobile detailing: when it makes sense
Mobile is the default choice for most people, and for good reason. You do not lose an afternoon driving across the city and waiting around. You hand over your keys, go back to your day, and come out to a finished car.
Pick mobile when:
- You are busy and your time is worth more than the drive.
- You want a routine clean or a full Signature Wash, not a heavy restoration.
- You have a driveway, a parking spot, or a garage with access to water and power.
- You want the car done at home, at work, or while you handle other things.
What you need on site
For mobile jobs we need access to water and electricity at your location. We bring everything else. If you are in a condo or apartment without an outdoor tap, that is worth flagging when you book so we can plan around it.

Sometimes the studio is the smarter move. Indoor space gives full control over temperature, lighting, and dry time, which matters for certain jobs and certain days.
Pick the garage when:
- The car needs a heavy deep clean and you want it done in a fully controlled space.
- The weather is bad. Rain, deep cold, or wind can slow an outdoor job.
- You do not have a safe spot at home with water and power.
- You are applying protection like ceramic sealant and want ideal cure conditions.
The Montreal factor
Montreal makes this choice more interesting than it is in most cities. Winters are long and salty. Parking is tight. A lot of people live in condos and triplexes without a private driveway.
If you have a spot at home, mobile is hard to beat here. You skip the slushy drive and the parking hunt. If you are downtown with no outdoor water access, the studio solves that problem cleanly. And in the worst of winter, indoor work avoids the cold slowing everything down. Either way, the salt has to come out, which is its own job. We cover that in our guide on removing salt stains from seats and mats.
Cost and time: what to expect
For a standard detail, mobile and garage land in the same ballpark on price. You are paying for the work, not the location. Our Signature Wash starts at $189 and covers full interior and exterior in one visit, whichever way you book it.
On time, mobile usually wins on your end because there is no travel or waiting room. The detail itself takes the same amount of hands-on time. You just do not have to be there for it. We bring mobile detailing to driveways and condos across Greater Montreal, from the Plateau and downtown to Pointe-Claire, and we have a garage in Lachine too. See all areas.
Does location change the quality?
No. This is the part people worry about, so it is worth being clear. A good detailer gets the same result in your driveway as in a studio, as long as they bring the right setup. The difference is convenience and conditions, not the finish.
The only time the studio gives a real edge is when the job needs controlled conditions, like a heavy restoration clean or letting protection cure properly without dust or rain.
So which should you choose?
Quick rule of thumb. If you want convenience and a clean, well-kept car, go mobile. If the car is in rough shape, the weather is against you, or you have nowhere to park it at home, go garage.
Still on the fence? You do not have to decide alone. At Gleam we run both, so tell us about your car and where you are, and we will tell you straight which one makes sense. Most of the time, the answer is "stay home, we will come to you."
